Photo taken with Instagram Happy Friday, friends! Any fun on tap for you this weekend? I'll be kicking it close to home for the most part. I've got plans to plant more veggies and get organized for a garage sale we're hosting next weekend(fingers crossed). I also hope to spend some time in the kitchen cooking up some lovely new concoctions.
In other happenings, I had my very first "wedding nightmare." It was bound to happen, I guess. There's simply too many elements for one's conscious mind to contain. Around 2:30 early Wednesday morning, I was startled to consciousness by a dream in which the Mister and I were in front of our family and friends exchanging vows and we realized that we had no rings. We had forgotten to purchase rings!! Then, my dream moved to our reception where we discovered that there was no DJ. Gasp!
After lying awake until about four in the morning fretting about all the tasked that have yet to be completed, I decided to do something about at least one of those nightmare scenarios. I got a DJ!
My dear friend and magnificent DJ extraordinaire, Rob Dowell, has agreed to rock the dancefloor at our wedding. Rob and I go waaaay back to my college days and he's become known in our circle of friends for his fun 80's mixes and his deadpan sense of humor. Here's his latest mix for your listening pleasure. Happy Weekend!
Hell0 friends! I'm happy to be back here on a Friday with some new music finds. Today, I'll be sharing a few different mixes that have recently caught my ear. I am, admittedly, not the best music hound out there but am blessed with friends who manage to keep me in the loop, thank goodness. As most of you already know, I'm a sucker for old school soul which is why I'm super excited to share my newest tumblr love and favorite music find as of late: Old Soul Music It is a magnificent collection of soul music, curated by some deep digging into the genre. I love it, especially because I get to hear old music that is new to me and discovering new music is one of life's simple pleasures. Besides posting regularly, Old Soul Music allows you to listen to a steady stream of classic and hard-to-find tracks complete with artist and title. Get some. You won't be disappointed. Next up are a few mixes that I've been listening to. The first one is a great chill mix by Poolside which I snagged from one of my music loving buddies. I love chill mixes with some feelgood flavor and that's what the guys from Poolside are all about: straight chillin'. The other mix is the newest Aeroplane mix which is always a fun listen. Prepare for chair dances or a wily housecleaning session with this one. I posted the March mix, but you can find the mix for February and January 2012 here and here. Tracklistings are here. Surely this will keep you smiling throughout the weekend. It's certainly helped me through my busy and crazed week. Happy Friday and enjoy!
The First Freedom by Hollie Chastain
Springtime feels like this lovely collage print by artist Hollie Chastain. Everything is alive and colorful. Springtime evokes a sense of freedom where all I want to do is run barefoot in the grass, sip lemonade, cook with the windows open and get my hands dirty in the garden. I love the message that Hollie conveys in the picture above. It's all happy trails and carefree adventures. My kind of happy artwork, for sure. Most of this week was spent enjoying the weather, hunting for the perfect props and looking into new opportunities. I'm looking forward to broadening my creative path in the near future and am currently working on the "making it happen" portion of the plan. It's part scary, mostly exciting and all good. Not to worry, the blog isn't going anywhere. In fact, I hope to be posting more as I continue to learn and grow. In the meantime, have a listen to the song that has been stuck in my head all week. I've woken up to it two days in a row and find myself humming it all the livelong day. Hopefully, sharing it with you will help it escape my brain and bring a little happiness to yours.
Have a wonderful weekend! What do you have planned?
I love stumbling upon new (to me) bands. I get so excited about things like this, especially because I'm attracted to older sounds (think Motown). Finding a modern band that I dig is like scoring a sweet vintage find when I least expect it. Except it's new and not old. Am I making sense?
I discovered Gardens & Villa last week for the first time. I often feel that indie bands can all sound the same so you have to know that I was pleasantly surprised to hear the dreamy sounds of Gardens & Villa. I especially like the video above. It rocks me right into an indie lullaby.
What bands are you listening to lately? I'm always on the hunt so please feel free to share away. Tell me what you think about G&V too. More tracks below.
You like? Or no like?
In my last post, I finally got around to talking about Feelgood February, a whole month dedicated to feeling good physically, embracing my lovely lady-ness and thinking only pretty thoughts. What better way to commemorate the feelgood than with the strong, powerful and dead sexy voice of Nina Simone. "Birds flying high, you know how I feel Sun in the sky, you know how I feel Breeze driftin' by, you know how I feel... It's a new dawn, its a new day and I'm feeling goood"
Do something wonderful for yourself this weekend and if you're feeling frisky, take a photo of that wonderful thing and post it on my Facebook wall. Happy Feelgood Friday!
Last weekend, I hit the road to spend the weekend in the ATL for a little soul sister therapy. My bestie and I had long, honest conversations, shockingly frank and hilarious discussions and there was, of course, music and more music. Besides a dope 80's playlist, we listened to this song repeatedly while getting all prettied up for a night on the town and it's been in my head ever since. So, in an effort to release this tune from perpetual repeat in my brain, I give it to you. The artist is Niki and the Dove, a band from Stockholm Sweden which also happens to be where another favorite band of mine hails from. Love me some Swedes and Malin's voice is hauntingly beautiful on this track. Maybe a little evocative of Stevie Nicks?? Have a listen or three and tell me what you think and by all means, enjoy this fantastic Friday. P.S. My week has gone a smidge awry due to some health complications with my kitty and I have yet to post about my Inside Job focus for the month of February. Not to worry, I haven't forgotten about it, just a little behind. Feelgood February is on the way.
I don't eat much swine, but I sure do love me some Fatback Band. This song is exactly what the funky doctor ordered. I figured since I'm a grown woman of 31 years now, that I should be posting only the finest booty-shakin' tunes. This year, music is a top priority. Mixes, music and the business of dancing. Serious, serious business. It is essential for the sunny lifestyle purported here on this blog. So, let's get on with it!
Are you read-ay?! Happy Friday, peeps!
Awesome logo design by Kelli Anderson Happy Friday! Did you have a most inspiring first week of the New Year? I hope so. My week has been one giant experiment in finding my rhythm thanks to this new project, which has me being quite the observer of myself. On another note, I have a secret to tell you. In the lovely digital world that I peruse, I have discovered a lot of inspiration from people/projects that originate, of all places, in Brooklyn, NY. I'm strangely drawn to this beloved borough and have slowly been dropping hints to the Mister that we should move there after we're wed. Yes, my secret (er, not so secret) wish is to move to Brooklyn in 2013. We'll see what the future holds. At least now my wish is floating in the Universe free to be manifested, right? Okay, so back to dancing! Meet one of the neatest projects I've come across called Girl Walk//All Day. It's a feature length dance-music video that follows three amazing dancers as they traipse across NYC. They've been releasing the film in episodes on the Gothamist website and this last episode made me dance in my chair and laugh out loud. The Girl, played by Anne Marsen is one after my own heart. Her unabashed desire to dance is infectious. Makes me wanna grab a tutu and join the fun! (yes, I still hold onto dreams of being a fly girl on In Living Color and a backup dancer in this video) Download the entire mashup mix by Girl Talk here and get your own happy dance on this weekend. Happy Friday!
Garland Christmas Card via Rifle Paper Co. Merry Christmas! I popped out of bed around 5:30 this morning, buzzing with excitement, just like I do every Christmas morning. I can't help it, it's just what I do. I love the feeling of Christmas- a cozy home, comfy pajamas, loved ones and coffee meant for slow, meaningful consumption brewing on the stove. I also love the act of giving gifts. It's almost more exciting to me than opening them. I'm dying to wake the Mister but I promised I wouldn't wake him until at least 8:00, which is clearly a most generous gesture on my part. In the meantime, I'd like to give you a little something. It's a compilation of soulful tunes from my previous DANCE! posts which post every Friday for your dancing pleasure. I collected some of my favorites and made a mix over at 8Tracks just for you. I like to think of it as soul food for your ears. Enjoy! Below Image: Up poster by Marcus at Poster-Inspired on Etsy
Ain't no party like a Christmas party, cause the Christmas party don't stop...I couldn't help myself.
One little known fact about me is that, on the rare occasion I'm tuned into a radio station that's not NPR, it's mostly likely a station with the word JAMZ in the description.
I like the jams, especially the old school ones. I heard this gem on one of my Christmas shopping adventures this week. I love the way Kurtis Blow makes a song just sound like a party. There's beats, crowd participation (say OW!), hand clapping, hollerin' and rhymes about Santa. C'mon, let's get festive, people! I'm off to wash all the butter and sugar-coated sin from this morning's baking session and then I'm off for a little more shopping. Then it's Holidatenight Round 2 with Chef Mister preparing something special. Can't wait to see what he's cooking. One last thing, I've got a special Christmas treat for you in two days so come back and claim your holiday gift from yours truly.
Happy Friday!
